Eczema is a dermatological condition that can occur commonly amongst young children, and to a lesser extent in adults. Several factors contribute to the development of eczema and the symptoms and severity experienced vary greatly from one person to the next. Some of these factors which contribute to the development of eczema may include environmental allergies, allergies to foods, chemical exposure, medications, and stress. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, a person with eczema may be experiencing significant discomfort, and at times the skin may even become infected, leading to the need for antibiotic treatment.

When addressing a condition such as eczema naturopathically, a variety of factors need to be considered. Dietary modification is utilized to minimize the consumption of foods and drinks that may further potentiate the inflammation. At the same time, focus is placed on including the types of foods and drinks that may assist with reducing inflammatory processes in the body. Some foods which may commonly contribute to skin issues include gluten-containing foods, dairy, eggs and soy. Specific foods may be suggested based on their content of nutrients which are known to assist with skin health such as those containing vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and essential fatty acids.

People who experience skin problems often will also present with digestive issues and/or high stress. Therefore, supporting both the digestive processes and the microbiome, as well as the nervous system is crucial. Depurative herbal medicines are usually also prescribed to assist with supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes. In additional to herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation will often be utilized to ensure therapeutic doses of nutrients to facilitate healing processes. A herbal cream may also be prescribed to assist with soothing and healing the skin barrier.

Finally, lifestyle recommendations will often include ensuring adequate hydration to assist with detoxification, stress reduction processes, and reduction in chemical exposure from food and products used around the home. If you or your child are struggling with eczema, naturopathy is a holistic healing modality that assist with skin issues such as eczema, and so much more.
