Naturopathic Management of Anxiety

In today’s day and age, many people struggle with anxiety on a daily basis. In fact, treatment of the nervous system with herbs can be traced back as far as 6000BC, through Ayurveda in the Indian subcontinent.

Whatever the reason may be for the anxiety, and whether generalized or situational, naturopathic treatment may assist with the management of ailments such as anxiety. Along with worrying, people often also experience other symptoms such as sleep disturbances, restlessness, fatigue, problems with concentration, irritability or tension. Other mental health disorders may also occur alongside with anxiety, so seeing another practitioner such as a counselor or psychologist, in conjunction to the naturopathic care you are receiving is really important.  Other modalities such as acupuncture and remedial massage may also be really beneficial.

Naturopathic treatment of anxiety addresses the issue from a few different angles.  Firstly, we look at reducing the symptoms of anxiety while we delve more deeply at other underlying factors.   Herbal medicine and nutritional supplementation are key factors here.  We also aim to balance the HPA (hypothalamic pituitary adrenal) axis, and then we address dietary and lifestyle factors to further support the holistic treatment. Alongside all of this, we aim to take steps to aid with prevention of the anxiety recurring.

There are also many things we can do in our everyday life to lessen the load on our nervous system.  Some of these may include:

  •  Gentle exercise to reduce stress levels and sympathetic nervous system activation, and trying meditation or some deep breathing exercises

  • Decreasing stimulants in your diet such as caffeine in coffee, tea

  • Increasing your intake of fresh, wholefoods by aiming for a variety of fruit and vegetables each day

  • Having a variety of protein sources in your diet each day, such as meats, fish, legumes, nuts and seeds, to provide amino acids to support mental health

  • Staying adequately hydrated each day with fresh, filtered water
